Daddy Dearest

There's an interesting thread on Digital Spy forum at the moment, started by someone who's either a very young girl or someone who doesn't know how to think critically or how to accept any opinion other then her own. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you faith11, which could mean that her name is Faith and that she's eleven years old. Her reasoning sounds like an eleven year-old.

You can read the thread here.

faith11 reckons it's "so wrong" that some people think Janine should get custody of Scarlett instead of Michael. Even though some well-intentioned and very intelligent posters such as kitkat71, lotty27 and the ever reliable felixrex have politely handed her her arse in her obtuse argument, she persists in this belief.

In fact, felixrex echoes my amazement at the incredible lack of compassion and sympathy, even understanding, of what suffering a woman with post-natal depression endures as opposed to feeling sorry for an extremely attractive (physically, to some) man entails. There's all this ignorant assumption, sounding a lot like the Matt Lucas chav character in "well, yes but she left the bay-bee" or "well, yes but people with PND don't abandon bay-bees" and such rot.

It's obvious that none of these people have ever had babies or known anyone who's suffered from PND. PND affects many women many different ways. Some women abandon children. Some ignore them. Some kill them. All whilst suffering from PND.

Let's try to approach this thing logically, first looking at exactly what Michael and Janine, as people, have in common:-

  • Both have massive daddy issues
  • Both lost their mothers when they were very small and under tragic circumstances
  • Both were made to feel peripheral and unwanted in new family dynamics
  • Both have made a living out of grifting
  • Both targeted certain types of individuals in scams - Janine older men, Michael vulnerable women
Now let's look at the basic difference between the two:

Janine has a heart and is capable of compassion.

Michael doesn't have a heart and is incapable of compassion.

Actually, let's be blunt. The basic difference between Michael and Janine is that Michael is a psychopath and Janine isn't.

A lot of Janine's perceived "evil" is nothing more than a defence mechanism. As well as everything else, Janine has an enormous trust issue due to abandonment. From the time she could remember, Janine was always being fobbed off and abandoned by her father - bunked off to be raised by her older sister Clare after her mother died, then returned to Frank after he remarried. She acted up and was bunked off to Clare again, before returning once more, only to have Frank abandon the entire family unit.

Janine acted out her frustrations. When she finally decided to live with her father, he abandoned her yet again, this time to marry Peggy Mitchell. And when Frank left Peggy, Peggy threw Janine out - when she was sixteen. At best, her siblings have treated her like a nuisance or a pest, especially Ricky, who was encouraged in this attitude by Bianca - which was ridiculous, since Bianca wasn't about enough to know Janine when she was anything other than a child.

But Janine cares for her family. She's loyal to them and looks after them. She's even loyal to long-term friends, like Billy Mitchell.

It's also mete to remember that Michael wouldn't have touched Janine with a barge pole when she was on her uppers, but responded to her come-ons when she was minted. Janine's intelligent enough to remember that and always thought he was with her for her money.

Michael is a fully-fledged psychopath - the works: narcissistic, cold, controlling, manipulative, totally without compassion. Like all psychopaths, he can turn on the charm - which makes him a far more effective conman than either his father, his brothers, or his numerous cousins. It also makes him able to walk away from a relationship without compunction. Psychopaths often use sex as a means of manipulation.

He also only preys on emotionally vulnerable women:- Kat (on the first occasion when Alfie had been imprisoned and she was on the run from goosn and on the second when Alfie had told her he wanted a divorce); Roxy (who was lonely); Jean (who was separated from her children and suffering from a bi-polar condition) and now Janine.

On an aside, the immensely self-righteous faith11 states categorically that Janine shouldn't even have custody of Scarlett because Janine was thinking about having an abortion.

That's a load of horseshit.

Roxy thought of having an abortion. Does that mean Jack Father-of-the-Year Branning should have full custody of Amy? Dawn Swann thought of aborting Summer. Tanya even contemplating aborting Oscar.

When Michael got serious about Janine, serious enough to marry her, she was pregnant, hormonal and isolated. She was grieving Pat, her brother had been exiled from Walford by his irrational wife and mother-in-law, she was completely and utterly alone. She'd been threatened by Cora. and when she tried to talk to Bianca about her worries, she was brushed off.

Janine was ripe for the plucking.

In case anyone has forgotten, Michael was involved in elaborately scamming Jean, causing her not only to entrust him with her lottery winings, but also thousands of pounds in takings from the Vic. Alfie was not only Jean's employer, he was family as, indeed, he was blood kin to Michael. That didn't matter to Michael, however.

During this time, Jean and others believed Janine was behind the scam. In the run up to her wedding, which stressed her enough, she was bullied and badgered by Cora and Rose, pestered by Kim, told outright by Jean that her baby wouldn't be loved.

When Janine gave birth prematurely and was presented with a very sickly child, Billy Mitchell and Whitney Dean spent more time at the hospital supporting her than Michael. Instead, both Whitney and Ricky caught Michael trying to run away twice. That wasn't from fear, that was just from a desire not to get involved. Michael never showed up for appointments and hardly spent any time with his wife. What he did spend, however, was her money.

So when she returned home, he fed upon her insecurities as a first-time mum, knowing that she would be hormonal after pregnancy and tired from tending a sick infant. He deliberately lied to her about his whereabouts, giving her cause to suspect he was having an affair, especially with Kat accidentally on purpose telling Janine that Michael never loved her or the baby, and Tanya genuinely accidentally reminiscing about Max having an affair when one of her babies were small.

Just to play with her mind further and to confuse her emotions even more, he passed onto her expensive gifts, bought with her money, in an effort to distract her. And on top of that, when she offered him a way out though paying him off, he turned the tables on her when she was at her lowest, telling her that she was unfit to be a mother.

This is what caused Janine to leave. As for the braggadoccio about Brazilian men, two comments made by Janine - and a viewer would have had to listen to hear them - put paid to that as a lie. She revealed she'd received a PND diagnosis in a meeting with her solicitor and Michael's. She also muttered something about the counsellors saying there would be trust issues, which led one to believe that Janine's time away had been spent in counselling.

As for Michael the good parent, he fobbed Scarlett off on all and sundry when Janine left, culminating in the night he screamed over her crib for her to shut up and later turned up the volume of the television as the child lay crying upstairs. A nanny he sought to hire wouldn't even work for him because she thought him strange.

He didn't get his act together until he convinced Roxy to move in as live-in nanny right before Christmas, and then handed the job to an inexperienced Alice, who worked for nothing out of sheer luurrrrve.

In fact, until Janine appeared, Michael couldn't even refer to Scarlett by her name, referring to her as "the child."

Scarlett was a means to an end for Michael, a tool that would further his future scams. He's a man who plays mind games with vulnerable people and who is more vulnerable than a child.

Janine is no saint, but she's way more deserving as a parent than Michael. Remember a psychopath will not kill himself - they love themselves too much; but a psychopath will kill anothrer person without a second thought - even a child.

Update: I see Princess Plagiarist is back on Digital Spy. She really should try to stop analysing Michael Moon (emphasis on the "anal" bit), because he really isn't a complex character and wasn't meant to be. He's a psychopath, pure and simple. He isn't self-loathing, he has delusions of grandeur and disdains everyone else. He does, however, know the art of manipulation and how to get under people's skin and get them onside, which is why three of those characters tonight, with very good justification for de-balling him, were running around like headless chickens ministering to his every need ... or have you suddenly forgotten how he wantonly manipulated, demeaned and psychologically bullied his fragile, hormonal wife last year - how he abandoned her to a sick child at the hospital or even, before that, how he mercilessly scammed Jean, even to the point of making her believe her child had died? If you have, then maybe it's time you took the knickers down that are stuck to the ceiling.
