Clear Off, Creepy Jean

The natives are restless, especially on Digital Spy, after The Mirror published its annual "EastEnders Is in Crisis" article, usually deemed a pack of lies (by the Digital Spy Luddites who are busy digging holes in which to bury their heads), but which presages something monumental about to happen in the soap. Last year such an article resulted in another within a fortnight, reporting Bryan Kirkwood's sacking.

The current article, itself, is poorly written, filled with misinformation and poorly researched. However, it's true that the show is now in trouble and, officially, 3 million viewers behind Coronation Street.

Which leads me to another thread on Digital Spy ...

The one whining continuously about Gillian Wright not becoming a central figure in EastEnders.

Gillian Wright as in Jean.

Jean as in "SAUSAGE SUR-P-R-I-I-I-I-I-S-E!"

Jean is, arguably, the most annoying character in the show at the moment, alongside Lauren; but Lauren is annoying because she's so unlikeable. Jean is annoying because of her voice, her OTT mannerisms, her sudden and shocking movements, juxtaposed with her creepy new-age gibberish masqueraded as wisdom.

Jean is bi-polar. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, that is not a mental illness. It's a physical condition - an imbalance of chemicals in the brain, which can be controlled and corrected through medication. It's a medical condition, and some of the most highly intelligent people in history suffered from this - from Richard III to Abraham Lincoln to Einstein to Stephen Fry.

Jean's particular depiction is tinged heavily with stupidity. She is either suffering from her condition or she's one of a growing number of village idiots. Ofttimes, she's reminiscent of an adult with learning disabilities. I suppose this is EastEnders' writing room tipping the wink to the old mediaeval superstition of the fool really being a person of great wisdom, but Jean's wisdom doesn't wash well with me.

There's the hatred she dispenses without remorse. One thing to defend your child (or even protect a murdering child as Phil Mitchell did), but Jean's daughter, who cold-bloodedly killed a man, is elevated almost to sainthood by Jean, especially as Saint Stacey sits sunning herself on some beach in some hot clime. Nope. Jean's special hatred is reserved for Janine, whom she blames for Stacey's departure and exile - ne'mind the fact that Stacey was romping the beds with Janine's husband. The rest of Jean's special love is reserved for Stacey's skanky cousin and partner in crime, Katshit; although Jean was hard put to defend her infidelity to Alfie.

In fact, it amazes me that Jean still remains with a family who set her up for benefits fraud, and then expected her to take the blame for a crime she didn't commit.

Still Jean badgered and bothered Janine up to the point of telling her her child would be unloved, one of the many stresses which resulted in Janine having a premature birth.

As for the numptie on Digital Spy who wanted to see Jean grow closer, maternally, to Michael in the wake of Janine's leaving, solely to annoy Janine when she returned, I say ... suck on it. The last thing we should be seeing is Jean screeching a lullaby of mummy-hatred to Scarlett.

Jean was axed once by Bryan Kirkwood. Then he listened to the outcry on the various fora and reinstated a character who lost all relevance when her daughter left the show. Since then, she's become an annoying comic character who veers between chasing after inappropriate men, throwing temper tantrums when she isn't allowed her way in the running of a business, dispensing foggy and indescipherable words of wisdom and having the odd bi-polar episode, which results in her sitting in a bath, hugging her knees and being bathed by Katshit.

She's soon going to resume a half-hearted friendship with Shirley which will, no doubt, see her evolve into a skinny version of Heather, made to absorb Shirley's verbal barbs and casual negligence in exchange for an ally to feed her apetitie of Janine-hatred.

Jean should just clear the fuck off.
