Danny Pennant: When Bullies Fight Each Other

There's nowt a prettier sight than when a gang of bullies turns inward upon itself, and that's what's happening at the moment at John Swallow's Walford Web Kindergarten and Bully Emporium, and it's all about Gary Lucy's return as the eponymous Danny Pennant.

You can read the lovely argument here and enjoy the handbags-at-dawn exchanges between such seasoned bullies as *Betty*, The Other Slater Cousin, and Toryboy Jark.

The most hilarious thing about the argument, itself, is the assumption that Danny Pennant is returning to tick the politically correct EastEnders' box marked "The Only Gay in the Village," based entirely on the fact that the character slept with Syed the other time he was lurking about the Square.

That was never established definitely.

The character could very well be gay. Or he could be bisexual. As people have pointed out, the show has never really had a bisexual character since the dismally bovine Tony Hills, who started out with Tiffany, dumped her for her brother, then slept with the spaghetti-haired female colleague of his before returning and leaving with Simon Raymond.

Or Danny Pennant could actually be a sexual reprobate, something which EastEnders have never had before in their history. Oh, they've had their fair share of male and female sluts, both heterosexual (Jack, Kat) and gay (Christian pre-Syed); but they've actually never had a real sexual reprobate - someone who followed the dictates of the Plantagenet king, Edward IV - if it were alive, he'd fuck it, if it were dead, he'd eat it.

That could be the route taken by Danny Pennant.

Another thing - people forget that Danny slept with Syed and then Syed invested money with him. Now that's food for thought. Danny might be one of these high-flying tools who'll do anything to close a sale or an investment, and that means sleeping with whomever his target is. Danny could as easily sleep with Syed as he could with Roxy ... or Cora the old grey hag. So in that respect, he may not even be gay at all, just an opportunist.

And there's absolutely no reason to believe he's going to be part and parcel of the much-anticipated "new family," people are hyper-ventilating about to the extent that one Walford Web kindergartner is creating names and ages for all concerned. It amazes me how these people lament the fact that there are too many teenagers and latent adolescents running around and dominating air-time, and yet these selfsame moaners either want a family with teenagers or they want Peter-Fucking-Beale, all of 19 and not with a bullet, to return.

Danny Pennant, like his alter ego Gary Lucy, is supposedly a male in his early thirties. The likeliest person with whom he'll consort will be Janine, and it will probably have something to do with her money.

As for him not being a Branning, don't speak too soon. If Simon Ashdown wants it thus, we'll find he's a by-blow of Derek's.
