I know it's difficult for British people to understand, but in some cultures, kids do call their grandparents other things than "Nan" or "Grandad".
For Christ's sake, Lola refers to Billy, her grandfather, as "Pops." Doesn't mean he's her dad.
I come from the Southern part of the United States. It's quite common to hear kids refer to their grandparents as "Daddy Phil" or "Mamma Dot" or something of the sort.
Phil knows he's the grandfather. Maybe he just has a problem being called "Grandad."
