Jake the Peg

A forum member from the Digital Spy Luddites Society posits a question:- Where Are They Going with Jake?

The obvious answer is back to MancLand and a reconciliation with the awful woman who's his real-life wife - Kym Marsh, who plays Michelle Connor on Corrie.

This is the second Kym Marsh husband EastEnders has employed. Cast your mind back to 2002 and the kerfuffle surrounding Jack Ryder's departure. Ryder was, then, the Mr Kym Marsh of the moment and left under a cloud when he published an interview in the now-defunct News of the World where he exposed all the juicy gossip about internecine bickerings behind-the-scene in the programme.

At least if Marsh and Lomas divorce, there will be no need to retain the character of Jake out of fear for what gossip the actor might disclose to his wife.

But several forum members remark on an observation I have made. The Jake-Lauren association sports absolutely no chemistry at all. In fact, it's downright creepy and perverted. Lomas looks like what he is - a lardy, scruffy Manc with the voice of a dirty old man, who looks as though he's in need of a hot bath.

I understand the reason TPTB are going with this storyline. They are taking the lazy, entitled, self-obsessed and spoiled teens that were Whitney, Lucy and Lauren and foisting them into "young womanhood." With Whitney the Walford Mattress, this means setting her up as an educational professional and dressing her up like a stripper disguised as a teacher, complete with marital aid shoes. Lucy and Lauren are being involved with older men, and contrary to what the irrelevant old trout vald says, for Lucy, this is nothing more than a continuation of the process started when TPTB paired Tiffany Raymond with Grant Mitchell. In fact, the age difference is less. Lucy Beale turns 20 in December. Danny Pennant is roughly about 32 years old.

With the Go-To Girl, it's clearly going to be a generational continuation of the teenaged Cross women's propensity to run after married men with children. Lauren will be to Jake, Sadie and their child what Tanya was to the dynamic of Max, Rachel and Bradley.

However, in this respect, EastEnders are playing a dangerous game. Whilst Whitney and Lucy are being booted and suited, Lauren is being dressed more and more like a teenager - specifically like a very young teenager: jeans and teeshirts, babydoll dresses etc. So the effect of pairing her with Jake results in a lairy, scruffy older man letching over an innocent virginal young girl who's barely legal. Honestly, all that's missing is a raincoat for Jake.

Think back to the horrifically young-looking Ruby Allen (sixteen with the age appearance of twelve) sprawled on a bed, undressed in fishnets and a bustier, waiting for the gormless Juley to take her virginity.

Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems as though EastEnders isn't content with fanboi bullies and teenaged deficienti, they're now looking to attract the paedophile demographic.

Jake the Peg, with his noticeable third leg and a tongue too big for his mouth.

Yuck.

  1. Totally agree about Jake, sneering letch & dirty old man is how he comes across. And no - there isn't any chemistry between them whatsoever. Actually, the one thing they do have in common is that neither can act.

I don't recall Lomas being THIS bad in Hollyoaks, but I think that was because of the bad guy character he was playing - & not to mention that nobody can act in Hollyoaks.

He would be much more effective playing the creepy weirdo - which may happen when his character is developed some more if he is going to be hanging around for a short while.

Can't wait for the eventual scenes with Joey or dumb & dumber. What a treat that is going to be.
