Walford Forever, one of the more reasonable children in the kindergarten, and not one of the bullies, has started a thread lamenting the lack of older characters on the show.
The person makes a valid point. There is an overt emphasis on younger characters in the show at the moment, and it shows; but the subsequent arguments, especially the pithy, obvious one promoted by The Other Slater Cousin, prove that a lot of these kids just don't get why the current crop of weenie tweenies on the programme are so vastly unpopular.
They serve no purpose.
Eastenders has always been famous for having purposeful, forward-moving storylines. In the past, we've had teens who fought, often against all odds, to further and better themselves - people like Michelle and Sonia, who were single mothers determined to get academic and professional qualifications, or even Ian, who fought against his father's desires for him, to become a successful entrepreneur and businessman.
Ricky Butcher became a qualified mechanic, married Bianca and started a family. Even Bianca and Tiffany Raymond matured into responsible wives and mothers, albeit Bianca seems to have regressed considerably since her return. Sharon went from being a spoiled daughter to a businesswoman in her own right.
Today's group of youngsters are spoiled, entitled, lazy and worthless, with no drive or ambition. Lauren is a mouthy madam, who's tried to kill her father, thinks she should be treated like an adult, yet thinks her parents should subsidize her lazy arse whilst she drinks herself into oblivion. She's rude, self-centred, self-obsessed and disrespectful - in short, just like her parents. Her sister Abi used to be the one shining light in a bevy of pejorative "yoof", but it seems now, since her return from getting her hair, tan and nails done and learing how to apply false eyelashes in Costa Rica, she's abandoned all thought of further studies and of becoming a vet in favour of hanging around with her soon-to-be convict boyfriend and the local teenage chav single mother, who only decided to have her baby as a means to getting more benefits and couldn't stay out of trouble if she tried.
Quite a few people have done an "awwwww-poor-Jay" reaction to his copping a majority of blame in Heather's death, but the truth is, if he felt so strongly about what was done to Heather, why didn't he find his balls and tell? What could the Mitchells do to him? Kill him? Who can forget that when Jay "became" a Mitchell, he strutted through the streets of Walford as though he owned them, and wasn't above employing the standard bullying tactic also employed by Shirley of "Do you know who I am?" And who can forget when he demanded service in the Vic (underaged) because, according to Jay, he could?
Speaking of doing something because he can, we had that awful scene between Joey the Turd
mouthbreather
and Whitney the Walford Mattress, where he snogged her (against her virtuous will) and then reasoned that he did it because he could. He's a liar, a manipulator and totally a chip off the old greasy block that's Derek -once again, a violent, wanton thug who's a coward and who only punches down.
Of course, there's also Whitney, the eternal victim, who dumps the nice boys for the bad ones and then whines when they drop her because she's not the skank - she's been abused. Spoiled skeleton
she can't see the light of day.
They are all negative images who offer nothing more than their own benediction for young people to behave rudely and badly with no repercussions.
As for the older generation - because as someone pointed out, this is what people like Jean are now - well, Jean, with her fiftysomething miniskirts and her dippy ways, along with Kat the fortysomething slag, are both insults to that classic generation of Pat, Peggy and Pauline - and that's not to mention the readymade matriarch (not), that ASBO granny Cora the Clueless.

Lucy Beale, another mouth-breathing phenomenon, whose head is so far up her arse
