MoaningLisa

No, not Lisa Shaw - although she was a memorable character, wasn't she? She shot Phil and had his baby. Not only that, but the actress who played her and Steve McFadden were an item in real life for awhile.

No, no, no, I mean the bothersome, little pest known as monalisa62003. I won't go into all the evil little things she does to people who point out her inanities, but I expect I'll receive some of her flying monkeys hurtling my way once again in cybersphere, so before I point out something to her that everybody and their dog seems to realise other than she, here's a song for her ...

Just for the record, Mona ... Phil loves Sharon.

Always has done, always will do. Every other woman with whom Phil's been pales before Sharon. Didn't you notice? Phil didn't even have to think when Sharon showed up in distress at his engagement party, and - really - the only reason he agreed to marry Shirley (and she proposed, remember) was out of guilt and also to keep her onside for the future. Remember at that time, he thought he'd got away with hiding what Ben had done.

Sharon has always been the Mitchell Brothers' love. Really, either of them would do anything for her - even Grant, even now. Sharon hung like Banquo's ghost over Grant's marriage to Tiffany. She's loomed over Phil's relationship with Shirley - because Shirley has been Phil's most serious relationship since Sharon and also because, apart from Stella, Shirley is atypical of any woman to whom Phil's been attracted.

Make no mistake, Phil was originally with Shirley because Shirley bonded with Ben. Shirley made Ben happy, and when Ben was happy, Phil was content. Shirley was also a warm body willing to have sex with Phil as well. She loved him. He was fond of and grateful to her. Yet he was unfaithful with Glenda and couldn't, wouldn't promise fidelity.

Glenda, possibly, reminded him, slightly, of Sharon - an attractive blonde woman who'd married into the Mitchell clan and was mistreated by her husband.

Phil is fond of Shirley, and he certainly feels guilty because his son was responsible for the death of Shirley's best friend. Ever since Shirley returned after the Vic burned, ever since Phil confirmed to her that his addiction problems would never have surfaced if Sharon had stayed in his life, Sharon has haunted Shirley.

Now her worst nightmare has occurred. Sharon's returned. It's eating her more than justice for Heather. That's why she'll blackmail Phil. That's why he'll call Carly to come for her. That's why she taunted Sharon at the R and R, which Sharon blew off professionally.

Phil loves Sharon, and Sharon loves Phil. Both will try to avoid this attraction for the moment. Jack may be a diversion with Sharon, but the pair have no chemistry. Indeed, Jack has had no chemistry with any woman, bar his last link-up with Roxy. Phil's attempts to reconcile with Shirley now are from desperation.

Phil wants Shirley back now because he fears she'll grass on him to the police, telling them that he knew and organised the cover-up of Heather's murderer. His desire for a reconciliation also is evidence of how much Phil really doesn't respect Shirley as an individual, worthy of respect - that he thinks she would be so craven to deny her best friend justice and come back and live with him? Actually, thinking about that, Shirley has given him every reason to believe that, the number of times she's blown Heather off to minister to Phil.

There is no complexity to Phil's and Shirley's non-relationship. Yes, she loved him immensely - but a love that strong can easily turn to hate, which is evidenced now by his betrayal of her. To Phil, however, Shirley was a friend with benefits. Contrary to what several people believe, Phil Mitchell is a man capable of compassion, and he feels compassion for Shirley, but that's not proper passion. At the same time, he's fighting, both to save his son from prison and to save himself from the same fate.

Phil and Sharon ... now there's a complexed and nuanced relationship. All roads for one, inevitably, lead to the other. Sharon's back on the Square for a reason, and it's not to couple with Jack (although if Bryan Kirkwood were still around, you could bet your bottom dollar that it would be all about that).

Just another thing ... Sharon is not like your standard EastEnders' woman who's achieved whatever she's achieved on the back of a man's efforts. Yes, Grant bought the pub for her. Yes, Steve Owen made it possible for her to own the pub again. But she sold the pub back to the Mitchells and bought what is now R and R. Unlike Tanya, who's used men for her own social and commercial success, Sharon is a stand-alone character in business without a man in tow. Where Alfie's and Kat's names are on the licence placque, Sharon was the landlady at the Vic - Grant had a prison record. Sharon ran the place, as she did with Angie's Den. Sharon will run the R and R now, without interference from either Michael Moon or Phil, and certainly not Jack.

Sharon without a man can survive. Tanya or Kat without men end up in the gutter. Shirley pretty much does as well.

Shirley and Phil were never EastEnders' great love story. They existed as a couple only as long as Ben was a positive part of their lives. Once Ben killed Heather, Shirley and Phil were toast.

Sharon and Phil ... loads of mileage. And the two of them, unattached, on the Square can only mean an eventual attachment. Sorry, MoaningLisa.
