Digital Spy Soaps Forum's question of the day is: What Could Be Done to Make Kat More Likeable?
You can read the thread here.
The short answer and general consensus of opinion is, basically, not much - therefore, it's time to kill her off. In fact, most commenters in the thread want to see her die. How amazing is that - that someone of such an iconic stature a decade ago how has a death wish implanted upon her by the viewing public!
Killing her off wouldn't be such a bad idea. It would mean she could leave and never come back. I'd actually settle with her leaving, preferably when the identity of her mystery Shagger is revealed.
Check It Out, a commentator whom I usually consider to be an arrogant, little prick with his head up his arse, actually makes a valid point: when one half on an established couple has an affair, the couple usually split. That's the Eastenders' code, he points out.
Actually, I'd go one step further and say that when one half of an established couple has an affair, when it's revealed, someone leaves the show. Sharongate was the vehicle by which Letitia Dean left Eastenders the first time. Patgate saw Mike Reid depart. Michelle Collins left when Cindy's affair with Simon was exposed and later when her subsequent affair with David was revealed. Bianca's affair with Dan resulted in her leaving Walford and the show.
Diederick Santer broke the code by ensuring that all four participants in Stax - Max, Tanya, Stacey and Bradley remained on the Square in the aftermath, and all that resulted in was the Brannings becoming a dysfunctional parody and kabuki dance theatre in the never-ending will-they-won't-they concerning both couples, which is still going on, boringly, to a great degree with Max and Tanya.
Sharongate and Patgate both concerned landlords of the Vic, and the full panoply of their reveals got played out publically with all the punters present. Sharon got shunned and Pat got the smack of her life. It goes without saying that when Alfie finds out about Kat's latest betrayal, he should reveal her for the abject whore she is when the place is packed to the gills. She should be summarily humiliated and kicked to the curb - preferably on a windy, rainy night with her excess make-up dribbling down her horrible orange face. As she stumbles into the gutter outside the Vic, she's physically stepped upon by her Shagger - in order to keep his feet dry.
And that Shagger should be Derek. Why? Because I think this storyline is meant to implode upon as few characters as possible - chiefly Alfie and Kat. Ray has been eliminated. Jack will be sniffing hopelessly after Sharon. Max has other problems; besides, he turned down Roxy's advances, and she's way better than Kat. Michael's main concern is Janine, and Janine will be long gone before this is resolved. It would make no point.
Derek has the least to lose, and he wouldn't give a rat's arse about drinking in the pub in the wake of this. In fact, he'd probably tell Alfie that he'd done him a favour in showing what a skank his wife really was.
Alfie and Kat are beyond repair as a couple now, and she is beyond repair as a character. Alfie has a future with Roxy as a couple. If Kat remains on the Square, besides the ubiquitous reunion question hanging over her head, she'll be nothing more than a sorry, sad, old tarty slag drinking herself into oblvion. We've already got Shirley.
Kat, as a character, is a spent force. Eastenders made her, and Eastenders destroyed her. Admit a mistake, chalk it up to experience and let her go.
As for MoaningLisa's assertion that Phil had an affair with Glenda and didn't split with Shirley ... this: The reveal of that affair was Glenda's leaving line, and the affair, itself, served to bring home to Shirley the reality that Phil actually didn't love her; and we're seeing the repercussions of that now. Suck it up.
But, really, the last sight of Kat we should see should be her dragging a bin bag along a wet, Walford street away from the Vic and out of our viewing lives forever.
The smell of Katshit is overpowering. Time to put the Kat out for good.
